I was telling you earlier that I had ordered some books on Amazon; well, the first one arrived almost a week ago, and (after having finished reading Soul Music by Terry Pratchett) I started reading it.
The Tipping Point, by Malcolm Gladwell tells the story of trends and booms, analysing the phenomena that causes the spread of ideas and attitudes in an analogy with infectious epidemics. It’s not just this; it also makes great use of various examples, ranging from revolution starts, hiv infection, fashion or bestseller
trends. While not a big theory in itself, the book’s main merit is to show briefly extremely interesting results of social and pshychological studies. From the game of 6 degrees of separation to Kevin Bacon, to theories on group size analysis and behavioral studies results. Believe me, I’m having real difficulties putting it down.
And it looks like I’m not the only one enjoying this author: BoingBoing has a little story on him, too.
