Program install annoyances

Top installer-related annoyances:

10. an installer/deinstaller that asks you to close your other applications (most common programs here)

9. an installer/deinstaller that asks you to reboot your computer in order for the program to work (most of Microsoft’s installs)

8. an installer/deinstaller that reboots your computer without your approval (for instance, the crappy ftp-file-syncronization tool I tried yesterday – I don’t remember it’s name, anyway it isn’t worth the link – I lost quite a few of unsaved data ‘cause of it)

7. an installer that connects automatically to the webpage for you to register. ( Especially annoying when you are on dial-up. Why? Oh, why? Did I tell you I want to go online? Do I look like having non-stop broadband? – happened lots of times back at my folks home.)

6. an app backed by the operating system to constantly pop up balloons saying you need to update, your antivirus software is outdated ( Come on, I updated it one week ago, give me a break…)

5. an installer that repeatedly nags you by popping up and saying you must reboot your computer, thus interrupting your full-screen game, stealing the keyboard focus, and generally causing you to lose the game (I got the message the first time I said I’ll reboot later; why didn’t you get the message as well? ) – and I’m talking to you here, latest Microsoft Security Update

4. a shareware that expires after 10 days or 10 uses (come on, folks, shareware is dead, it’s time for free software and premium services; or at least give me a bit more time to really see what your program is about)

3. an installer package loaded with Megs of useless crap you will never use and that changes your settings by “recommended” ones(oh, yeah, you’re one of those, Yahoo Messenger with Voice and other goodies), and whose crap you have to uninstall by hand, afterwards

2. an installer loaded with spyware and adware (Gator or that Bonzy monkey anyone?)

1. an installer that formats your disk and replaces your data with proprietary software that allows all of the above (ok, it’s another anti-Microsoft jokes, but.. hey, it’s kinda true)

Awesome article! A must-read for every desktop user out there. Clean, detailed, and based around free software.
I recommend that you make an ebook of this post :-)
For reasons of simplicity, I use 2 windows installations with different security software. This way I can switch from one to another and have a scan from another vendor.
Also, I’d suggest every advanced user have a bootable CD with Avast, Lavasoft and McAfee utilities to run. It does help and is faster than killing nasties from the windows GUI.
