Link of the day

An interesting and cool idea: OldVersion.com . The site offers for download the freeware/shareware older versions of popular programs. A great feature, not only for historical interests, but also for practical reasons: very often the newer versions are bloated, are slow and memory-greedy and have features you probably never use. A great example for this would be Winamp.. (actually I did discover this site when searching for alternative locations for downloading Winamp).

    wow, cool, thanks!

cu singura observatie ca multe firme au inceput sa “reproseze” userului tot mai violent faptul ca nu a upgradat la noua versiune. de la “hey, there’s this new x.y.z version, wanna upgrade?” la “to use this feature, you need to upgrade” (desi al naibii feature era available si-n versiunea ta curenta, cand actuala nu exista! si nu, nu s-a schimbat protocolu’ sau mai stiu eu ce…).

acu’ sincer sa fiu, ca developer, si mie-mi vine (e omeneste) sa “iau userul de gat” in the good sense, adica “maaaan, e super-cool ce-am facut noi, versiunea veche mi se pare asa lame acum, incearca sa vezi, mega-cool!” :-)

    two sides of the story…

But it is still cool to use some old apps on new machines; on my work-computer, winamp 2 feels like on Rocket Fuel :-) !

On Saturday I got to use the site aforementioned, and I feel good:

After a failed upgrade to Yahoo Messenger 7(beta), and since reverting back to Yahoo Mess 6 failed(the app was crashing right after starting it), I decided to try to use Yahoo Messenger 5, downloaded from the OldVersion site.

Miracle: it works and it works great: it connects to the server in a matter of seconds(about 30 seconds, vs the 5 minutes version 6 needed to connect), and is extremely responsive. Offcourse, I don’t have any access to the Y! Avatars, nor to the animated and extended smileys. But in all matters concerning Instant Messenging, I greatly prefer it to all upgraded versions.

Now.. if only I learned how to disable the “You need to upgrade” notification….
